Context
Originally, we were asked to design a home gym and boot room in the existing garages of Tambre House. A requirement of conversion was to establish an independent staircase to access the pre-converted loft space.
The conversion soon necessitated the construction of a detached garage, built from a traditional oak frame, which suited the conservation area.
The project reached its pinnacle with the design of an outdoor pool and an adjacent pool house overlooking the gently sloping gardens that lead down to historic fishponds.

Design
The conversion works to the garage were a light touch. Internal partitions and domestic finishes were installed internally, and the garage doors were replaced with aluminium glazing color-matched to the existing features of the house.
The design of a large paved entrance walkway became feasible once the garages were converted. This really transformed the property, giving it a regal, stately home feel.
Due to the needs of the conservation area, the replacement garages were designed to be subservient and traditional. A simple gable-ended, linear form was chosen, crafted from sustainable oak. The choice of timber frame also echoed the nature of the heavily wooded driveway.
The pool and poolhouse were carefully placed on a lower plane than the ground floor of the house to ensure uninterrupted views over the grounds. Again, a simple oak frame structure maintained an ongoing theme and complemented the limestone of the existing house and wider conservation area.
